TOLEDO, Ohio — May 28, 2025

A Toledo investment firm executive has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a decade-long scheme that defrauded investors of millions of dollars, authorities announced Wednesday.

Richard Scheich, an executive with several entities linked to Northwest Capital, entered a guilty plea in Lucas County Common Pleas Court on May 27, 2025, admitting to two counts of conspiracy to engage in a pattern of corrupt activity and three counts of sale of unregistered securities. Prosecutors said Scheich used false invoices and misleading financial statements to secure funds from lenders and to encourage investors to continue funding operations tied to Northwest Capital. The scheme is believed to have defrauded investors of approximately $72 million overall, with Scheich personally pocketing nearly $9 million. (ohioattorneygeneral.gov)

As part of his plea agreement, Scheich will cooperate with prosecutors and testify against other co-defendants who remain under investigation. A sentencing date will be scheduled once proceedings against the remaining defendants conclude.

The case was investigated by the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Securities and the Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and is being prosecuted by the Special Prosecutions Section of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. (ohioattorneygeneral.gov)

“This prosecution underscores Ohio’s commitment to holding financial professionals accountable for deceptive investment practices,” said a spokesperson for the Attorney General’s Office. “Our office continues to pursue those who exploit investors for personal gain.”

Financial experts note that multi-million-dollar Ponzi and investment schemes can devastate local economies and erode public trust in legitimate financial institutions. Authorities continue to urge investors to conduct thorough due diligence and report suspicious investment opportunities to the Ohio Division of Securities.
