MILAN, Italy — February 22, 2026 — Forty-six years to the day after the “Miracle on Ice,” the U.S. Men’s Hockey team has claimed Olympic gold. Canton, Michigan’s Jack Hughes played the hero, netting the “golden goal” 1:41 into overtime to defeat Canada 2-1. Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck (Commerce, MI) was the brick wall behind the win, making 41 saves. “We knew the history of Feb. 22nd,” Hughes said. “We wanted to give the next generation of American kids their own miracle.” Great Lakes Dominance: Of the 25 players on the U.S. roster, 14 grew up in the Great Lakes states or played for Big Ten hockey programs. Michigan and Minnesota alone produced nearly half the squad, cementing the region as the undisputed “State of Hockey” for the U.S. Olympic movement.
